Glick Junior Achievement Center off of Keystone Avenue. “Fly Higher” is focused on helping youth in foster care o...r the juvenile justice system, but it is open to any youth experiencing hardships and adults who experience environments, either personally or professionally, with at-risk youth.
The event, hosted by Kreative SOULutionz, will host a series of interactive workshops, for youth, utilizing various arts, sports, education and business practices to teach self-awareness and self-discipline. It is the goal of these workshops to engage each participant in the learning process. There will also be informational seminars, available to both adults and youth, focusing on topics such as foster parenting, mentoring, tutoring and volunteering. “Flying Higher” will also have a youth fashion show, exhibitors, lunch, live music and performances, parent panel and motivational speaking. Keynote speakers at this year’s event are: HBO Def Poet/author, Darren “RedStorm” Redmond, Motivational speaker/Fnancial advisor, Cynthia Newman, Author/Motivational Speaker Robert Jackson; Actor/Author/Poet, SIAM and WBNA Championship Winner, Yolanda Moore. The event will also feature other local and national workshop facilitators such as HBO Def Poet/Actor Derrick "Abyss" Ghraham; Poet/Author Tasha Jones; Hip Hop Artist/Motivational Speaker Casey "ILL" Bridgeford and . The Parent Panel will feature organizations like "Your Parent Partner," "Transformations", "Rebuilding the Wall" and more! Both youth and adults are encouraged to attend and help make a difference. There is a $5 admission. Youth in foster care, with mental health problems and learning disabilities, and child welfare case histories, are=2 0being increasingly steered into the juvenile justice system, including its secure institutions. These youth face higher risks of delinquency related to their disability or disadvantage. According to the Indiana Youth Institute, in a national study, it was indicated that youth involved in formal, high-quality relationships with adult mentors skip half as many days of school as their peers.
